When spring arrives, people tend to focus on their outdoor living spaces. While that is a good idea, there are ongoing indoor tasks that should not be ignored.
Here are a few to consider. Making a mental (or physical) note to check these items quarterly is a great preventive measure.
- Change HVAC Air Filters
Depending on your unit or system, the schedule to change the filters can vary. The important thing is to stay on the recommended schedule. Why? The air filters capture the allergens and dirt in the air. In the spring, homeowners may open their windows to get fresh air. Fresh air is not only refreshing, but it can also be full of pollen. The simple and relatively inexpensive task of changing HVAC Air Filters can purify the air in your home.
- Change batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
The school of thought is to change these batteries two times a year, and an easy way to remember when to do it is to schedule it for when we change the clocks in March and November. Whenever you decide to do it, it is important to be vigilant and stay on schedule. No one wants to find out the batteries for these vital home gadgets are dead when they need to be operational.
- Check washing machine hoses.
This is another one of those household items people rarely give a second thought about until they find a flood of water around their washing machines. Some of these hoses are made of rubber so when they rupture, there will be no advanced notice. Not to mention there could be considerable damage to the floor, appliances, and walls around the washing machine.
- Clean dryer vents.
The lint from clothing builds up in the dryer vent. Not only does this include the removable lint filter, but it also involves the outdoor vent. Failure to regularly clean the outdoor vent can cause a blockage. This is even more critical if the vent is near shrubbery or plants. A buildup of lint can be a fire hazard.
- Check for pests.
It is not too early to see bugs and even ants entering the home so be on the lookout. A trip to the hardware store for some traps or other household pest control options may be necessary also.
While these are not glamorous homeowning tasks, they are vital to keep your home both safe and efficient. The good news is that all the tasks are relatively inexpensive. Only discipline, time, and effort are required.
